How will the Proposed NE 18th Overpass Impact Wetlands and Floodplains? *

Elimination or reduction of marsh area will accelerate water flow into Four Mile Creek increasing the potential for flooding. Reduction of floodplain will also raise flood water levels. Flooding in the area of Briarwood recently heightened concern for measures which would reduce flooding in the Four Mile basin. The McClure Engineering Four Mile Creek Storm Water Management Plan authorized by the City of Ankeny stated that one of the recommendations to reduce flooding was to increase wetland area in the Four Mile Creek basin.   Removal of wetlands in the area of the Four Mile basin by construction of the NE 18th bypass will be doing the exact opposite of the recommendation in the McClure study. Creating new wetlands or using banked wetlands in other areas outside of the creek basin, as suggested by the city, will not mitigate potential flooding problems caused by construction of the NE 18th overpass.  Wetlands and floodplain in the vicinity of Four Mile creek near the Briarwood area need to be preserved.  The City of Ankeny may be increasing the potential of a lawsuit should flooding occur if the NE 18th Street overpass is constructed as proposed in the feasibility study authorized by the city.
